BM Music Education ‘27

Hello, and welcome to my portfolio! My name is Ryan Firchau, and I am a third year music education student at Western Michigan University.

Why Teaching?

“Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent.” - Victor Hugo

music can change lives. It builds connections, strengthens character, and gives students a voice when words aren’t enough. Being part of that journey is why I chose to become a band teacher.

I want to create an environment where every student feels valued and capable, regardless of their starting point. Watching a student grow from struggling with their first sounds to performing with confidence is one of the most rewarding parts of teaching.

Performing around the country.

Western Pep Bands (Basketball)

Performing in pep band for Western Michigan University’s basketball teams has been one of the most energizing and meaningful parts of my musical experience. Playing at games, I’ve seen how music can elevate the atmosphere, bring fans together, and directly support the team on the court. Pep band requires quick adaptability, strong listening skills, and a high level of consistency, especially in a fast-paced, high-energy environment. Being part of that ensemble taught me how to stay focused under pressure while contributing to something bigger than myself. It also reinforced my belief that music has the power to unite a community and create a shared sense of excitement and pride.

Western Pep Bands (Hockey)

Performing with the pep band for Western Michigan University’s hockey team was an unforgettable experience, especially traveling to St. Louis, Missouri for the national championship. Being part of an event that was broadcast live on television added an exciting level of pressure and pride, knowing our performance reached audiences far beyond the arena. That experience pushed me to perform at a higher level of focus and professionalism while still bringing energy and spirit to support the team. It reinforced the importance of preparation, adaptability, and teamwork, and showed me how music can play a vital role in creating a powerful and memorable atmosphere on a national stage.

Western Michigan Wind Symphony

Serving as the principal tuba player was a defining part of my musical experience, requiring both strong individual musicianship and a commitment to leading within the ensemble. In this role, I was responsible not only for providing a solid foundation of sound, but also for setting a standard of preparation, tone quality, and professionalism for the section. One of the highlights of this experience was traveling to Chicago to perform for the American Bandmasters Association. Preparing for and performing at such a prestigious event pushed me to refine my skills at a high level while representing my ensemble with pride. It was an opportunity that reinforced the importance of leadership, accountability, and excellence in performance.

Valuable Connections

Building Meaningful Relationships Through Music

Having Dr. Mary Land as one of my music education professors has been an important part of my growth as a future educator. Through her teaching, I have gained a deeper understanding of effective instructional strategies, thoughtful lesson planning, and the importance of meeting students where they are. She consistently emphasized the value of preparation, reflection, and building strong relationships in the classroom. Her guidance challenged me to think critically about my teaching practices and pushed me to become more intentional and confident in my approach. Learning from her has helped shape my philosophy of education and strengthened my commitment to becoming a supportive and effective music teacher.

Having the opportunity to meet and listen to Dr. Tim Lautzenheiser was an inspiring and impactful experience in my development as a music educator. His insights on leadership, student motivation, and the deeper purpose of music education reinforced my belief that teaching goes far beyond technical instruction. He emphasized the importance of building relationships, fostering a positive environment, and helping students grow not only as musicians but as individuals. Hearing his perspective encouraged me to be more intentional in how I connect with students and to focus on creating meaningful experiences that will stay with them long after they leave the classroom.

Teaching Videos!

Although I am going to be a first year teacher, This is not my first time teaching. I have had the opportunities to be in the classrooms of El SOl, Hillside, Kalamazoo central, Maple street, and Hackett Catholic Prep.

Companion packs

A companion pack is a collection of supplemental educational resources designed to enhance the teaching and learning of a specific piece of band music. It provides directors and students with targeted technical exercise and creative activities that go beyond the notes on the page.
